(While they pronounce it funny, it looks to me like "Viiv" is just Roman numerals for 64: VI = 6; IV = 4; so VI IV = 6 4.) So you do have 64-bit hardware. It is capable of running both 64-bit and 32-bit operating systems. The choice is yours - or whoever installs Windows on your computer. If you install the 64-bit

By far the majority of PCs use 32-bit processors, because despite AMD's efforts to push 64-bit CPUs into the marketplace early, Intel's first widely-promoted 64-bit CPU is the just-released Core 2 Duo. However, if by "upgrade" you mean "Start Windows XP, put in the DVD and install Vista as an upgrade to XP" then you don't have a choice - there is no upgrade path from 32-bit Windows XP to 64-bit Vista. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User] rghar...@gmail.com * NEW!

Specifically, Merom can handle 64-bit instructions and has a 64-bit data path. The 945 chipset, however, can only handle 32-bit addressing, meaning that the Core 2 Duo/945 pairing is still limited to 4 GB of RAM. This will be fixed in Santa Rosa. Not long ago, I though the 4 GB ceiling didn't mean much on anything

With a 64-bit wide word, more precise calculations take half the time they would on a 32-bit chip. They don't give any other real major 64-bit exclusive benefits though. However, eventually this will still limit threads to the speed of one core, which'll prompt more and more rapid speed increases.
