At least not for the x86-64 designs like AMD's X2 and Intel's Core Duo series. The big allure to the AMD64 design (why Intel eventually adopted it themselves as EMT64) is that it allows the CPU to run in a 32-bit mode by ignoring the 64bit register extensions. That means you can run 64 bit software,

You should be aware that there is very little 64-bit software and very few 64-bit device drivers, and none for aftermarket devices. The OS supplied will most likely be standard 32-bit WinXP Home. So what you are buying is a faster 32-bit computer that would like to be fully 64-bit. OTOH, Core Duo is competing with

The 32/64 bit question is harder to answer. In general no, a 64 bit CPU is not inherently faster than a 32 bit CPU of the same clock speed. In fact some early model 64 bit CPUs are actually slower when running 32 bit code than a 32 bit CPU of the same clock speed. Core 2 Duo CPUs do not have this problem.
